Be·Witched has launched to connect romantic modern witches to their New England roots by teaching history, folklore, and current events.

The witchcraft movement is growing globally. In 2015, 1.5% of the American population considered themselves to have "other religion," according to the Pew Research Center. This included Wiccans, Druids, and Satanists alongside Scientologists and Unitarians.

Witchcraft has a long history, often forgotten or re-imagined by textbooks. Who was accused of witchcraft? What sorts of magic might these ancestors have practiced? How has being a witch changed? And where are we going?

Be·Witched focuses readers on the witch history of its home, New England. It provides biographies of famous witches. We explore local folklore. Movies, books, and other media get reviewed. And we discuss current events and their impact on the witch community.

Posts

Rev. Samuel Parris said, "If ever there were witches...here are multitudes in New England," in 1692. Witches had a long history in New England even before the devil came knocking in Salem. English history blends with international folklore here. The very air breathes magic. We are surrounded by colonial houses and boneyards and woods. Who else can boast the Witch Capital of the world? Where else could The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (often abbreviated to CAoS) be set?

After the release of CAoS, a lot of witches were afraid of witchcraft's public image. While CAoS doesn't depict modern witchcraft, it relies heavily on historical perceptions. Be·Witched launched in 2019 to celebrate that history and create a community around it. To create a strong movement, we need to face these perceptions head-on. To create sustainable practices for ourselves, we need to remember those who walked before us.
  • Everyone can access historical and editorial posts. Each article should be around 500 words (with occasional exceptions).
  • Followers will see a series of posts called the "101 Series." Topics will include meditation, astrology, cartomancy, holidays, etc. Weekly divination will also be available for review.
  • Mutuals can access my personal posts. These might include off-topic content, personal witchcraft, etc. You can see how to become a mutual in my brochure.

The Writer

Katherine Palmer has been involved in paganism for over ten years. She practiced Celtic Reconstructionism for the last three. She has only begun working on a historical cunning craft. When she is not researching or writing articles, you can find her snuggling her dog, sipping tea, or writing in her diary. Her name comes from one of Rhode Island's accused witches.
